RG: as a kid. In other words, if you are parent who says that you are wishing your daughter well and youre telling the authorities that shes just mentally ill and its just a really, really sad and tragic case that shes making up all of these allegations of abuse and throwing herself down stairs, and beating herself up all for cries for help, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera you wouldnt then also pursue a multi-year long effort to destroy her life. Right. Morrison was arrested and charged with felony child abuse and third-degree assault (a misdemeanor) in the incident that had led to Fierceton's hospitalization, and an additional felony child abuse count for the incident that had triggered the DSS caseworker's visit earlier in the year; the arrest warrant alleged that Morrison had deliberately slammed her daughter's head into the table. In any event, The University of Oxford, where Mackenzies doing her Ph.D., has remained supportive, and in the wake of The New Yorker investigation, and the resulting protests from students and faculty, Penn lifted the hold on her degree. [H]onestly, first-generation is never something I've really identified with fully. Penn again spoke with Morrison and, this time as well, the St. Louis County prosecutor who had decided to drop the charges, without informing Fierceton, which the university defended as standard practice not to identify witnesses interviewed. RG: Right. I n November 2020, University of Pennsylvania graduate student Mackenzie Fierceton, 24, won the Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University. MF: You know, in my personal experience, there were not very many kids who came from a background like me. Or is that it separates two into one? Thank you so much for having me. The Intercept is an independent nonprofit news outlet. Well, Mackenzie, thank you so much for joining me and sharing your story. Uh, my lawyer. I identify with the FGLI umbrella term and definitely being a low-income student, but I've never really called myself a standalone first-generation. "I had so much anger and grief, and I didn't want them to be affiliated in any way with this new life I was building. And MacKenzie is the only one whos allowed to answer these questions. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. The court granted Morrison a protection order against her former husband; Fierceton had no relationship with him from that time onward. What happened the night before? A trial was held in early 2019 at which she, Fierceton, a psychologist and a DSS investigator testified. She found Fierceton's diary at the house and read it, then interviewed teachers and administrators at Whitfield, learning of Morrison's insulting texts to Fierceton. RG: And did they say anything along those lines? And I just want to read this for people. Penn didnt respond to a request for comment, but in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, they write: Penn denies that there are accessibility problems with the Caster Building which contributed to Mackenzies medical emergency or to [Cameron] Drivers death. RG: And do you know Linda Tirado? But its interesting because most of the questions are about these applications and then the second half is when it turns to these questions of the abuse. She considered the advantages and disadvantages of reporting her mother, but ultimately feared she might not even be believed, as her mother would tell people she was mentally ill or lying. I mean, youd been taking loss after loss, despite having the facts on your side. So, yes. Mackenzie Fierceton, C'20, has been awarded a 2021 Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford. RG: Mhmm. And if you havent already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. What about Rhodes? There was also the part of me that was terrified. Aviv tells the story of Mackenzie Fierceton, a former student at the University of Pennsylvania. The department of social services substantiated Mackenzies allegations, as did the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Review Board, which is an independent state panel. And I think said something along the lines of there were things missing and it was distorted. "I advised him that this was ridiculous, and this had to be a 'status thing", she said. Fierceton applied for the Rhodes Scholarship with assistance from Penn's Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. "You can't couch-surf in a pandemic", Norton said. [2], Later that year, after that first foster home turned out to be "chaotic", with Fierceton's foster sibling attempting suicide, she moved to another one. MF: Yes, definitely. ")[3], The OSC report also concluded that nothing in her academic record warranted the revocation of either degree. And she had gone to a private school growing up. Because Im not under any illusion that Im the typical foster kid. If we review your medical records, are we going to see you had broken ribs and facial injuries? DSS had originally planned to place Fierceton with one of her mother's sisters but put her in foster care after Whitfield's principal warned the agency that Fierceton would not be safe with them. There were some pretty basic errors, such as my name, my birth name, and my birth place, and claiming that I didnt have a sibling, that I wasnt low-income, a lot of facts that were pretty easily disputed. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. "[2], When Fierceton returned to the St. Louis area on vacations and breaks, she stayed with friends. And theres also literature thats economic literature versus sociology, different fields have different perspectives on what that relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system is and what the causes are. But the outline of the story is this: Mackenzie was raised in a wealthy St. Louis suburb by a single mother who was repeatedly abusive, according to two state agencies. She expressed some concern to Penn staff that if she won, the media attention might incite her mother and her family to attack her reputation, and expressed on a form she filed with Penn as part of the process a concern of hers that FGLI students such as herself were "pressured to be someone they were not amidst their application process." Raised in Chesterfield, Missouri, a West County suburb of St. Louis, she attended and graduated from the Whitfield School in Creve Coeur. And did you find this after The New Yorker article was published? And so that was when it really transitioned, the second half of it, into these really intimate questions about my abuse until the point where I was sobbing and couldnt answer the questions anymore. But there was another definition that was also along those lines that I fit, that was, again, public on the website. The teacher recalled that she had black eyes and hair matted with blood, a description corroborated by a nurse who saw her on arrival after an ambulance brought her to nearby Mercy Hospital St. Louis. [2], Shortly after the Rhodes investigation began, Rafaelle was informed that Penn was proposing to revoke Fierceton's bachelors on the grounds of her apparent self-misrepresentation. And so I did definitely have that kind of like: I have no idea what else is going to convince these people. [2] She was also working two jobs, as a policy fellow with Philadelphia City Council and another interning in social work at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Nothing I have is persuasive to these people. And she was shocked. But yeah, that, I guess, just one point of clarification that I recently, in the last few months, just found out about. And so I was like, of course, Im going to respond again. RG: Who will spend some significant amount of time in poverty. Cause Ive just wanted to go on with my life and, you know, live it. And so where is your story now? Now-provost Beth Winkelstein told this person: I know youre here as a supporter for MacKenzie, but you cannot speak. [2], The trust notified Fierceton at the beginning of 2021 that it was conducting an investigation into the allegations. So it makes some sense that they were very similar questions. Penn has released its hold on a master of social work degree from Mackenzie Fierceton the former Rhodes Scholarship recipient who filed a lawsuit against the University following its investigation into allegations that she falsified her status as a first-generation, low-income student and survivor of abuse. While her yes answer to "At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court?" [1]:111112, Penn's investigators asked Fierceton why she had pretended to be asking on another's behalf when she made her queries within the university. I wrote a poem about the actual what the message was, which is so cheesy and Im cringing at my 17-year-old self [laughs], but it was about the healing power of gratitude. RG: And I just want to read this for people. Fierceton had apparently made much of her status as a 'first generation, low income' student, an abuse survivor who aged out of foster care. And Im glad that people are having the kinds of systemic discussions that are so key to all of this. "We have concluded that there is a basis for serious concern and that further investigation by the Rhodes Committee may be appropriate", she wrote. And I decided to do it cause I felt like I had nothing to lose and I ended up making gratitude lists every day for years and it really was a very healing experience for me. Now Im sobbing, Im hyperventilating, and the staff member interrupted and said: Can we have an estimate of how much time is left?
